Navigating the world of Cambridge English Qualifications can feel like a marathon. Whether you are just starting your journey at the A2 Key level or aiming for the "near-native" prestige of C2 Proficiency, understanding the road ahead is half the battle.
This hub article serves as your roadmap. We will break down every level, the scores you need, and the skills you must master. To dive deeper into specific preparation strategies, be sure to explore our Green Valley Language School Blog.
A2 Key (KET)
The Foundation Level
At the A2 level, you are no longer a "beginner." You can handle the basics of English in simple, everyday situations.
Your Level: You must be able to describe your basic daily activities, understand simple signs, and interact with English speakers when they speak slowly and clearly.
The Exams:
Reading & Writing (60 mins): Focused on simple written information and basic sentence structures.
Listening (30 mins): Understanding announcements and simple conversations.
Speaking (8–10 mins): A face-to-face test with another candidate.
Pass Score: 120 – 139 on the Cambridge English Scale. (A score of 140+ earns you a B1 certificate).

B1 Preliminary (PET)
The Practical Level
B1 marks the transition to becoming an independent user of the language. It is often the minimum requirement for many entry-level jobs or foundation study programs.
Your Level: You should be able to express your opinions, talk about your hopes and ambitions, and handle most situations while travelling in an English-speaking country.
The Exams:
Reading (45 mins): Understanding the main points of factual texts.
Writing (45 mins): Writing a short story or email (approx. 100 words).
Listening (30 mins): Following longer conversations on familiar topics.
Speaking (10–12 mins): Expressing likes, dislikes, and opinions.
Pass Score: 140 – 159.
B2 First (FCE)
The Confidence Level
This is the most popular Cambridge exam. It proves you have the language skills to live and work independently in an English-speaking environment.
Your Level: You must be able to follow technical discussions in your field of expertise and interact with native speakers with a degree of fluency that doesn't cause "strain" for either party.
The Exams:
Reading & Use of English (75 mins): This level introduces "Use of English," testing your depth of grammar and vocabulary.
Writing (80 mins): Two pieces of writing, including a mandatory essay.
Listening (40 mins): Understanding complex arguments and various accents.
Speaking (14 mins): Sustaining a conversation on a wide range of topics.
Pass Score: 160 – 179.

C1 Advanced (CAE)
The Professional Level
C1 is the standard for high-level professional and academic success. It is recognised by thousands of universities and employers globally.
Your Level: You need to understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognise implicit meaning (sarcasm, irony, or subtext). You should be able to use language flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes.
The Exams:
Reading & Use of English (90 mins): High-level vocabulary, idioms, and collocations.
Writing (90 mins): You must produce clear, well-structured text on complex subjects.
Listening (40 mins): Understanding abstract topics and fast-paced discussions.
Speaking (15 mins): Discussing complex issues in detail.
Pass Score: 180 – 199.
Top Tip: One of the biggest challenges at this level is cohesion. To bridge the gap between B2 and C1, you must master sophisticated linking words. Read our guide on Mastering Advanced Connectors for C1 Writing and Speaking.
C2 Proficiency (CPE)
The Mastery Level
This is the highest level offered by Cambridge. Passing C2 shows the world that you have mastered English to an exceptional level, approaching that of a native speaker.
Your Level: You can understand virtually everything heard or read with ease. You can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.
The Exams:
Reading & Use of English (90 mins): Extremely nuanced text analysis.
Writing (90 mins): Writing for different audiences (reports, articles, letters) with perfect register.
Listening (40 mins): Understanding even fast-paced speech in various dialects.
Speaking (16 mins): Talking about sensitive or complex issues with precision and flow.
Pass Score: 200 – 230.
